I'm reimaging a friends MacBook Pro retina and he does not want Yosemite on it. Apple replaced iPhoto with the new photos app (Yosemite only) this past week and I can't get iPhoto from the usual place. So now I'm searching for a disk image from third-party sources of the correct iPhoto version to match his iPhoto library. I was supposed to get his computer back to him four hours ago, now I'm wondering if I'll even get it back to him today. I hope I will. In the mean time this is annoying me.

Im trained in mac osx software and hardware diagnostics, Im starting to regret getting that training because people ask me to do stuff like this and its just annoying to do

Macs are great, the company sucks though.

I'm on Yosemite and I've never had that issue. I also still have iPhoto.

Im on yosemite as well and still have iphoto, no issues either. But I'm respecting his decision. Its his computer, not mine.

I used to be a Mac fan, but I really don't think that people get what they pay for anymore. I was willing to pay the Apple Tax when they built killer computers that were well supported for years after they were obsolete and made serious workstations, but I went back to PCs a few years ago and haven't even been tempted to go back.

Their hardware has gone down the tubes as of late, but I still prefer OSX over windows. Im currently rocking a mid-2010 13" MBP. I consider this to be the last "great" apple machine. My next computer will most likely be a built Hackintosh. That or a built PC paired with an 11" macbook air that I would use solely to be portable and transfer files over from the PC

Well at least it's doing something that they want to do. Also, it's not moving your mom's apps around on her iPhone for the 100th time. Yes I've tried to teach her, and no she still hasn't learned.

What you want is becoming more and more impossible today.
Try deploying/updating App store apps over the Enterprise to users that won't be using an apple ID.
Apple makes it hard to NOT use their newest shit.

They completely removed iphoto and aperture from the appstore. Thats the issue

I'm on Yosemite and I've never had that issue. I also still have iPhoto.
Haven't updated to 10.10.3 yet, eh?

Apple really fell down the slope since Cook took over. My current (shitty) MacBook will be my last Mac.

Oh my god, Parents and technology... If I have my mom ask me one more time what that facebook beeping is Im gonna scream. Also, earlier this year I was sick for 2 weeks, couldnet get outta bed. The printer ran out of toner and my mom had no idea how to refill it, so she just left it.

Yeah. Just checked. I haven't.

Luckily my dad is pretty good about technology. He's one of the people who will keep their devices for years. He still uses his 2nd gen iPod touch and an android from about 5 years ago. He never has problems. Or at least fixes them himself. He had the iPod classic (one of the ones without the color screen) for years until the hard drive died. He just got a new iPod after that because we couldn't find replacement parts anywhere.

Use the "Hammer Tool." It's a specialized tool for finding errors in operating systems and is compatible with every single version of Mac OSX. It's a really great tool, I make $50 an hour working at home using it to fix various Mac computers and it works great!

I think it started before that. They're a toy maker now. Just look at how many editors gave up Final Cut after Final Cut "Pro" X. I know a ton of people who went back to avid after that.

I'm in exactly the same boat. I do hackintosh some things here and there, but even the OS is getting annoying. Mavericks is kind of the last straw for me. Been using Linux a lot at work on the VMs I'm writing automation systems for, but I'm mostly using windows 8.1 at home on various touch-enabled devices. (I love my Asus vivotab note 8!)

Fuck FCP X. It's just another iMovie.
Logic is still okay though. But Logic, and by extension GarageBand, technically isn't theirs.

I'm not going to bash Logic because it works for a ton of people, but Logic is definitely not what they used when designing it. I couldn't get my head around the workflow fast enough, so mothballed it. I'm mostly using Reaper now after a decade or so of Pro Tools and experience with a ton of other DAWs as a sound engineer.
![]() 04/14/2015 at 21:30 |

Logic is much stronger than most DAWs, they're just giving it a different facade. I use Logic a lot, and there's just so much that can be done, and so easily.
But Logic isn't Apple's. Logic was actually created by a startup called Emagic, and Apple bought them up.

>13 MBP
>last great apple machine
You've got to be kidding right?
You're completely ignoring that the second gen revolutionized the laptop industry by going completely to solid storage.
You're also not taking into account that the Retina MBP also revolutionized the high DPI screens on laptops.

All DAWs are the same for the most part. Logic is really good for people who are creating entirely in the box. I'm not really one of those people since I record "live" bands.

But all that new hardware is proprietary and has absolutely no 3rd party support
![]() 04/14/2015 at 21:54 |
|
Apple has never had a lot of 3rd party hardware support. The video cards in both the PowerMacs and original Mac Pro always had to be mac specific .
The only thing that you can change in the new portable Macs is the SSD, and there is 3rd party support. OWC sells SSD upgrades. I do hate that the fact that the ram is soldered, but that's why I ordered mine with 16GB.

good luck. My mom foolishly - and without consulting me, her go-to tech guru - bought a MuckBook about 5 years ago, and it's stuck on Leopard or Lion or whatever, and cannot be updated, because apple hates peasants and wants to keep selling the same crap over and over. I need to spend some time with her laptop and put Windows 8.1 on it.

who cares about having 5 million pixels, That just makes playing games that much slower, not that there are any games for macs anyways. I’m fine with 1080p

its 10.5 leopard, my aunt is in the same boat, she bought a MBP in 2009 or whenever leopard was still the highest Mac OS, my mom bought an iMac with Snow Leopard on it, and she just upgraded to yosemite, because her hard drive failed and the repair shop updated it for her.
